Russian Thread

The Russian Thread has this name because its inventor is a Surgeon that has a clinic in Moscow, Sulamanidze, M.A. It is used for the treatment of the laxity of the facial skin without surgeries. This way, we can lift the tissues.

The basic idea is simple. It uses a polypropylene thread, similar to the one used in surgeries. It has especially guided flukes that are capable of, as soon as applied, work as an anchor in the facial tissue. They are applied according to directions that perform the intended lifting effect (elevation). The flukes do not allow the thread to move, maintaining the elevation. The compatibility with the tissues makes the organism accept it.

For application simplicity, it can be used in a wide age group and in more precocious times, when a conventional surgery would not still be suitable.

It can be used separately or combined with other techniques. In our clinic, we prefer using the Russian Thread along with other techniques, like the Bioplasty.

In a young face, the fat layer and the muscles are firmly anchored in the bone structure and has a sustentation capacity. The skin is in its correct position, and we can observe characteristics of a young face, with volume, clear outline and a shape tending to be oval, with flat skin, without wrinkles or furrows.

In the aged face, the muscles are flaccid, the fat layer falls, and the skin accompanies everything, becoming flaccid too. Then, the furrows, the "Chinese mustache", the " Bulldog Cheek", wrinkles and stains appear. The treatments such as Botox, the Fillers and the Peelings can help in many aspects of the aging process. However, when the laxity process settles, the only alternative was the surgical lifting.

The Russian thread, or Lifting Beramendi, is now offered to help control this problem. It can be used separately, or as we prefer, combined with Bioplasty and other techniques.

The Russian Thread is a poly-propylene thread of double convergence. In other words, it has claws in both directions and when it is put in the flaccid tissue, it maintains a suspension degree.

The poly-propylene thread is a material that is used in internal surgical sutures assimilated by the body. It is not biodegradable, and it is biocompatible. It also has a strong resistance. It usually does not cause allergic reactions. It is for that reason that this material is used in surgical sutures, mainly with the vessels. It is widely used all over the world. The poly-propylene was the chosen material for the production of the Russian Thread, or the Beramenndi Lifting Thread . The Thread possesses two segments of claws that run in opposed directions towards the center of the thread.

The threads are put in the fat part of the flaccid tissue through an especially developed guide. After having inserted a part of it, we pull the tissues upward. The claws hold the tissues and do not allow the moving of the thread. The thread is then tied. The thread itself immediately promotes the sustentation of the tissue and, after some time, there is the formation of new tissues that will maintain the sustentation.

The placement should be used in a favorable surgical environment, with routine asepsis techniques and under local anesthesia. The patient schedules the time for the procedure and returns home immediately after the procedure. People with laxity of the facial and neck skin, who are 30 / 40 years old, and who want to control the laxity without surgery. The Russian Thread can be used as an option to the traditional lifting surgery that can be postponed to a more advanced age. The Russian Thread technique has additional advantages for certain situations. For instance, people with serious face laxity who would like to submit to a surgical lifting of the face, but who have contraindication to the surgery due to the clinical problems, such as cardiac problems, diabetes or advanced age. These people can undergo the Russian Thread procedure because it is a procedure with local anesthesia and with smaller risks than the surgery. It is also adequate to people with skin laxity that could submit to the surgery of lifting, but who do not feel want to perform a surgical procedure. Their choice may be the Russian Thread due to its easiness. People with all of the skin tones: white, oriental, brunette or black, could submit to the procedure of Russian Thread because it does not cause scars. Nowadays, we combine the Russian Thread technique with the Bioplasty, another minimally invasive procedure, with very good results. Bioplasty enhances the beauty and rejuvenates the face. The additional degrees of laxity can be complementarily treated with some few Russian Threads or Beramendi threads .

The Russian Thread is introduced through micro cannulas that, when removed, tie the Thread in the flaccid tissue .

Anesthesia for the Russian threads is local, the same one used by the dentists. Very anxious patients can be lightly sedated. In this case, for safety we count with an anesthetist, who keeps the patient sleeping, but a very light sleep.

Which are the necessary examinations for the implantation of the Russian Thread?

A clinical examination, Hemogram and coagulation examinations, and other complementary examinations if the patient has some health problem.

The local anesthesia separately, presents a certain degree of pain that can be easily accepted by the patients. This is the kind of anesthesia that is performed most of the times. For the patients that are intolerant to the pain or for very anxious ones, a sedation makes the procedure most comfortable. For safety, we request the presence of an anesthetist in these cases.

The number of threads depends on the treated areas and the laxity degree. It can vary from 2 to 14 threads. Now, with the combination with the Bioplasty, we have been using a smaller number of threads.

The thread is implanted in the deep layer of the facial fat. The combinations with Bioplasty allows a smaller number of threads. Anyway, they are not visible and can not be felt by the touch. It is important to be sure the patients has the indication to perform this type of treatment.

The patient has to avoid laughing and speaking too much in the first days. The patient has to wear a mask of anti-allergic adhesive plaster for 2 days. There may be some edema and ecchymosis. If the patient wants, he/she can go back to work immediately after or the following day after the procedure. The patient may take 2 or 3 days to resume his/her normal activities because of the embarrassment the adhesive plaster or the signs of the procedure may cause. For about 30 days, the Thread can be felt. It is the process of sustentation of the face that is changing. After this time, anything else can be felt.

The result is immediate, but a process of gradual improvement still continues for some more time.

Yes. There is another type of Thread, with similar techniques. In our Clinic, we use the Lifting Beramendi thread, which has already been tested in Brazil, one of the largest world center of aesthetics.
